Our work
In Afghanistan
The Solidarity Committee’s work in Afghanistan is directed towards people living in poverty and vulnerability in rural areas. Children, young people, women, and persons with disabilities are prioritised target groups.
The Solidarity Committee works through partner organisations in Afghanistan, with funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), Swedish Postcode Lottery, Radiohjälpen/Musikhjälpen (Radio Aid/Music Aid), Water for all, the Delegation of the European Union to Afghanistan , and private donors.
- Preparatory education for children with disabilities is implemented through our Afghan partners Afghan Development Association (ADA) and The Liaison Office (TLO) in the provinces of Kunduz, Takhar, Baghlan, Ghazni, Paktika and och Badakhshan.
- Solidarity Committee cooperates with the Danish organisation DACAAR, which, among other activities, enables women and men in rural Afghanistan to secure a livelihood through vocational training and savings and loan groups. DACAAR also implements irrigation projects.
- Solidarity Committee finances ten midwifery clinics operated by the Afghan Midwives Association (AMA) in rural areas of Wardak province. Each clinic is staffed by a midwife who lives in the village and provides antenatal and postnatal care, regular check-ups during pregnancy, and family planning services.
- War Child Canada improves children’s learning through new technologies, such as tablets, in the EdTech project. The project was initiated by SC.
- In a Sida-supported programme, civil society organisations in Afghanistan are strengthened. The support spans three years, starting in late 2025. The programme includes, among others, organisations working for persons with disabilities, traditional civil society actors in rural villages, an environmental and climate organisation, and professional associations. What unites these organisations is that they are, in different ways, important to the Solidarity Committee’s target groups. The partner organisations are: Accessibility Organization for Afghan Disabled (AOAD), Afghan Midwives Association (AMA), Development and Humanitarian Services for Afghanistan (DHSA), Environmental Protection, Trainings and Development Organization (EPTDO), Kabul Orthopaedic Organisation (KOO) and The Liaison Office (TLO).
- The programme “Youth Empowerment and Skills Development Initiative (YES)”, supported by Sida, focuses on strengthening livelihood opportunities, skills development, and economic pathways for Afghan youth across Kabul, Nangarhar, Balkh, Herat, and Kunduz. The programme is implemented by SC in partnership with War Child Canada, The Liaison Office, Afghan Bridging Initiative, and PACT Radio. The duration is three years and it starts in July 2026.
- The project “Back to Learning: Inclusive Education for Crisis-Affected Children” in Herat Province, implemented from August 2026 to July 2028, aims to strengthen access to safe, inclusive, and quality education for crisis-affected children in Herat Province, with a particular focus on girls, returnee children, internally displaced children, and other marginalized groups. The project is possible thanks to funding from Radiohjälpen/Musikhjälpen (Radio Aid/Music Aid). Parts are co-financed by Solidarity Committee through support received from the Swedish Postcode Lottery. The project is being implemented in partnership with the Afghan civil society organization Citizens Organization for Advocacy and Resilience, COAR.
Engagement
Solidarity Committee’s goal is to increase public support in Sweden for the rights of the people of Afghanistan. This is achieved through the work and activities of our local chapters and by increasing knowledge about the situation in Afghanistan. We organise seminars, give lectures, and publish the magazine Afghanistan-nytt. Our fundraising efforts enable donors to make a difference for women, children, young people, and persons with disabilities in Afghanistan.
Advocacy and Influence
Solidarity Committee conducts advocacy to ensure continued political engagement and support for Afghanistan, with a particular focus on development assistance, climate adaptation, and the rights of women and girls. We engage in dialogue with political parties, write opinion pieces, and organise events that bring together experts, researchers, and policymakers. We collaborate with our members and like-minded organisations in Sweden and internationally to reach a broad audience with our messages.
