Solidarity Committee strengthens midwifery skills
Continuous training, mentorship and internships improve the quality of the care for mothers and newborns in Afghanistan.
Through its support to the Afghan Midwives Association (AMA), the Solidarity Committee is helping to improve the skills of midwives in Afghanistan. The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme was inaugurated in Kabul in April.
– When we invest in midwives, we invest in the lives, in hope and in the future of thousands of families, said Gette Saduzai, executive director, of AMA, in her opening speech.
– We do not just aim to provide training. We aim to inspire, not just build skills. We aim to build confidence, not just implement activities, but create real change in the quality of care.
The programme will ensure that midwives maintain up-to-date knowledge, skills and competencies to provide high-quality, evidence-based care. Through continuous training, mentorship, and internships, midwives can adapt to evolving clinical guidelines and ensure safe delivery practices. The programme also helps midwives take leadership roles and advocate for care that is based on women’s needs.
The programme is funded by Sida and will run until 2028. Planned efforts include:
• Mentoring to strengthen the clinical competence of about 30 midwives
• Leadership programme for 15 young midwives
• Continuous further education of around 600 midwives
• Training of 30 trainers
• Efforts to strengthen the clinical competence of midwives throughout the entire maternal and newborn care chain for around 180 midwives
• Information campaigns to promote care based on the needs of women for around 1,500 midwives
