Webinar: Does a Bird Have More Freedom Than a Woman in Afghanistan?
On August 15th, the Solidarity Committee for Afghanistan invites you to a webinar where we explore and challenge some of the most common narratives about women’s situation in Afghanistan.
Birds, squirrels and cats have more freedom than women under the current Taliban regime, said actress Meryl Streep in a widely cited speech at the UN headquarters, calling on the international community to address the Taliban’s oppression of Afghan women and girls.
August 15 marks four years since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan. To mark the date, the Solidarity Committee for Afghanistan invites you to a webinar where we explore and challenge some of the most common narratives surrounding women’s rights in Afghanistan.
What is the reality for women in Afghanistan today? Are they allowed to work, study, or leave home without a male chaperone? Are burqas mandatory? How strictly are these restrictions enforced – and what’s the reality behind the headlines? Join us for a critical discussion to better understand the current situation – and how international perceptions may help or harm those living under Taliban rule.
